The Harsh Reality Of Seeing Ourselves On A Surf Video

The photos still leave us in doubt and sometimes they even lead you in mistake, but with the videos there is no way to escape the disappointment. – For those who have been through this, you know what I’m talking about.

Well, the cruel truth is that most of us surfers think we surf a lot better than we actually do. Even surfers less confident of their abilities make this mistake. – there are exceptions of course.

It’s not our fault, it’s not that we’re overconfident or that we think we’re too good. The problem is that when we’re surfing we always think we’re doing better than we actually do, even more so if we’ve never seen ourselves filmed.

Without a doubt, the first time is when it hurts the most. However, even after seeing ourselves in videos a few times we still have the same problem – although the expectation starts to adjust to reality with the amount of times we see each other recorded.

If this problem happens even in surfers who are constantly filmed, imagine surfers who never or rarely see themselves surfing.

Nothing prepares you for the first time you’re filmed surfing.

This is also why nowadays I think there is a lot of overconfidence and most surfers think they are better than they are. It’s because they’ve never seen a video of themselves surfing. Your confidence in your surfing is inversely proportional to the number of times you’ve seen yourself surfing.

Usually those surfers who think they are very good are surfers who have never seen themselves filmed.

However, although it is a big blow to your self-esteem and confidence, watching videos of you surfing is one of the best things to help you evolve.

The videos allow you to analyse your mistakes in detail and get more awareness of your movements and techniques on the board.

We can help you with that, in our coaching programs we have included surf sessions that are recorded on videos and a video analysis session.

Despite being painful, it is very good for our development as surfers.
